VISITING Mirboo North, Member for Gippsland South and State Leader of the Nationals Danny O’Brien, and Shadow Minister for Education Brad Rowswell committed $3.5 million to rebuild the town’s sports stadium should the Coalition win Government.
“The stadium is more than 50 years old and is the only indoor sporting facility in town,” Mr O’Brien said of the venue shared by the Mirboo North schools and community.
“It does not meet current sporting standards, lacks adequate run-off areas and has changerooms and toilets that are well past their use-by-date, he remarked.
Mr Rowswell said the commitment would support local schools while recognising the stadium’s wider community use.
It is heavily used by both the primary and secondary schools, local basketball, the Mirboo North Football Netball Club, yoga groups, martial arts clubs and other community organisations.
Basketball Victoria’s Facilities and Government Coordinator Tess Anderson was present for the announcement, saying a new stadium is “very much needed for the community”.
With her role and having a couple of sons playing basketball, she is mindful of safety and said she’s heard there are a lot of injuries on the hard Mirboo North court.
