Well-being program promotes mental health of veterans
Inverloch veterans recently found healing and connection through a kayaking and sand art day at Port Smythe.

THE Inverloch RSL recently organised a captivating well-being program event for veterans, which included a kayaking and sand art day at Point Smythe. The aim of the event was to promote the welfare and mental health of veterans and to showcase the Inverloch RSL Sub Branch’s outstanding work in creating innovative experiences for the veteran community.

A group of local veterans embarked on a thrilling kayaking adventure, paddling their way across the waters of Anderson’s Inlet from Inverloch to Point Smythe. Expert trainers from Offshore Surf School provided guidance and support to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants. The serene and peaceful surroundings heightened the sense of calmness throughout the journey. After kayaking, the veterans participated in a therapeutic sand art activity led by creative arts therapist, Dr Carla van Laar. Working within a giant circle to create an over-sized mandala, participants crafted intricate patterns and designs using sand sculpture and found objects. Participants reported that this process assisted them to express themselves and find inner peace.

Dr. van Laar, a leader in the field of creative mental health, commended the recent Inverloch RSL wellbeing program event. She explained, “There is plenty of research showing that physical exercise, time in natural environments, and engaging in creative activities promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances overall mental wellbeing. The most important evidence for us though, is the self-reporting and testimonials from our veteran participants themselves. The contrast between how they feel before and after engaging in a day like the kayaking and sand art adventure to Point Smythe is compelling verification. The Inverloch RSL’s well-being program allows veterans to experience the calming beauty of Mother Nature, engage in meaningful experiences together, and reconnect with their inner resources”.

The success of this well-being program event is a testament to the remarkable work being done by the Inverloch RSL Sub Branch. Their commitment to organising unique and engaging activities reflects their deep understanding of the diverse needs and interests of the veteran community. By designing events that combine physical exertion, artistic expression, and connection with nature, the Sub

Branch actively contributes to the overall well-being of veterans and their families. The Inverloch RSL Sub Branch continually strives to promote a sense of camaraderie, support, and belonging among veterans. Through their innovative programs and initiatives, they create environments that foster the growth of strong social connections, promote mental and emotional well-being, and remind veterans of the importance of self-care and self-expression.
