YOUNGSTERS have been hitting the beach in droves as the region’s surf life saving clubs kick off their annual Nippers program.

Amid perfect summery conditions last Thursday, Cape Paterson Surf Life Saving Club (CPSLSC) began their Nippers session at their newly renovated state-of-the-art facility.

The club was also able to officially celebrate the opening of the new facility in late December, after months of delays and rescheduling due to COVID restrictions.

CPSLSC president Ray Rust said the turnout for this year’s Nippers program was a record for the club, with more than 270 participants.

“The previous record was 220, and on top of this, PBE Real Estate sponsored us with almost $8000 to purchase new uniforms,” Mr Rust said.

“It is overwhelming to see so many participants this year, and we’ve had many more locals pick up the program.”

Mr Rust said thanks to the club’s new facilities, this has helped attract more membership, which is now at almost 800 members.

“We’re usually a Melbourne centred club, but we’ve also had lots of locals sign up,” he said.

“The new club will support the community a lot better.”

Mr Rust added the club’s soft opening was also a huge success, with almost 300 guests attending for a night of celebrations.

The Nippers program is for children aged between 5 and 13, helping them learn vital skills on the beach and in the water in a safe environment.
