Dear Tarwin Valley councillors,

I am very concerned about the manner of the proposed sale of “Watson’s Park”, situated adjacent to our pioneer family farm, on the realigned Mardan Road.

“Watson’s Park” became alienated by that realignment, and I believe was part of our Lester family farm, 631 Mardan Road - Lot 112A.

Subsequently, our Lester and Watson families have had a long association as farming neighbours and Watson’s garden legacy.

Gordon Watson and wife Linda were well known Leongatha district horticulturists, having regular Garden Party fundraisers, to raise funds for the Leongatha Swimming Pool, Memorial Hospital, Guide Hall and the tree plantings at Mossvale Park, Horticulture Park and McIndoe Park.

Therefore, I believe that “Watson Park” should be acknowledged and respected as a tribute to Watson’s long, horticultural contribution to our district and not be proposed for sale.

My own interest in horticulture, has meant that, at times, living so close to “Watson Park” I have been able to contribute to its care and future.

There are plants that originated from Watson’s own garden and planted by Gordon, or myself, over decades - Eucalyptus gomphocephala - Tuart Gum Eucalyptus polyanthemos - Red Box (more recent) Angophora cordifolia Pinus halepensis - Anzac Pine Tristaniopsis conferta Fraxinus excelsior and Claret Ash and many other species.

I am willing to continue further interest, maintenance and horticultural study.

The Koorooman and Mardan district has little vegetation cover or wildlife refuge remaining, so though small, this significant vegetation remains a precious natural refuge and tribute to the Watson family contribution to our Shire wellbeing.

“Watson’s Park” needs care, I would appreciate the courtesy of being considered and involved in “Watson Parks” future.

Dick Lester, Leongatha
