I know it is not fashionable these days to offer praise, but would you allow me to thank the Bass Coast Shire Council for providing the planning and consultation, and the council and Victorian Government for the funding, to ensure the Wonthaggi to Inverloch off-road path proceeds.
This long-awaited pathway, using disused and largely neglected public road reserves, will enable cyclists, walkers and joggers to move between Wonthaggi and Inverloch without the noise and danger of travelling on the increasingly crowded Bass Highway.
The path will not only provide for already active people, but will no doubt encourage many others to get into cycling (perhaps on an electric bicycle) or walking, with the promise of an outing by the sea, or some shopping midway through their journey.
And of course, the pathway will be developed as a vitally important safe vegetation corridor for birds and animals, including our struggling koalas, so many of which have been killed while attempting to cross busy roads.
I look forward to being amongst the first to take advantage of this asset, which no doubt will become another important plank in the shire’s tourism strategy.
Whilst in this happy frame of mind, allow me also to thank the shire for the standard of its road maintenance. The quality of grading on our lane has been excellent.
