WHILE Eddie Fowler fended off lighthearted comments from family that it’s time he retired, a large number of people were present on Friday to celebrate him and his wife Helen and the combined milestone of 50 years in business achieved at the Corner Service Station and Welshpool Outdoors.

The couple began their time at the Corner Service Station, nicknamed the ‘Bloody Garage’ by Helen, on the Queen’s Birthday weekend in 1974, moving to the business’ current premises in 2010.

Welshpool Outdoors continues to service vehicles and is a Husqvarna and CFMOTO dealer, also providing bottled household gas.

The couple’s four children Tania, Stacey, Jason and Rikki have all been part of the business, with son Jason having completed his apprenticeship there.

While Helen has long since retired from the business, Tania and Stacey are ready to continue it for the long term, but Eddie isn’t going anywhere yet.

“Thank you very much, and no I’m not resigning,” he said following family speeches of support that included the odd gentle nudge.

Amusing stories were told, including the fact Eddie used to tie one of Tania’s kids to the tyre stand to prevent him getting out and straying onto the road.

One of those present at Friday’s celebration, Mohya Davies, referred to Eddie as the Mayor of Welshpool, a title by which he is popularly known due to his huge contribution to the community.

“You’re the driver of this community and have kept it together,” she said during the speeches.

Mohya elaborated afterwards that Eddie is a strong advocate for those in Welshpool and surrounds and was instrumental in helping establish the town’s Transaction Centre that has been pivotal for locals.

Eddie continues as president of the Welshpool & District Community Group, one of the local organisations he is part of.

He is also a Justice of the Peace.

Ian Conn was one of the many at the Welshpool pub to celebrate the 50 year occasion.

“I’ve been dealing with Eddie since I used to call him Mr Fowler,” he said, the farmer having bought motorcycles from the business over the years.

“He can’t do enough for you,” Ian said.

Mel Brindley has been dealing with the business for 20 years as a sales representative for Burson Automotive Parts, and Capricorn Society where she is now area manager.

“He’s got both daughters working for him plus a son-in-law and an ex-son-in-law, so it tells you the calibre of the business,” Mel said.

Welshpool Outdoors has withstood the setback of last year’s Boxing Day storm despite the lack of insurance coverage for flooding, with more milestones set to be celebrated in future.
