BASS Coast College saw a sell-out crowd for their closing night of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory production held at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre.

The well-loved storyline with some dark and humorous undertones, the morality of the story still stands true today, it’s a mirror to society of some of its worst aspects, but with a redeeming opportunity for us all to be more like Charlie – gracious, not greedy, selfless, and kind – which ultimately makes the world a better place.

The production was co-directed by Dan Moldrich and Brad Boucher and choreographed by Danielle Taylor – generously giving their time to the 2023 performance.

Dan and Brad instantly recognised that the renowned narrative of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would not only attract an audience but attract interest within the student community – allowing a larger ensemble with the Oompa Loompas and thus giving additional opportunities to include students who are relatively new to performing.

“This was before I became aware of how technical the show is and the scale to which it aspired.

“I based set design on several influences seen in larger professional productions, the use of backdrops allows more stage space for a larger ensemble to participate - backdrops credit to Adam Cochrane – our Graphics Teacher,” said Brad.

“We decided to cast the show at the end of last year, reaching out to primary schools asking grade 6 students to audition then, and the leads have had their resources since then, rehearsals have been twice a week since the start of term one, with an extra few scheduled on occasional Sundays, as well as two full workshop days during the school holidays.

“The aim has always been to encourage student involvement at all levels, I’m very proud that we have had representation from all four campuses, across all year levels from 7 – 12.”
