THE Royal Humane Society of Australasia (RHSA) is honoured to posthumously award Lisa Marie Mandeltort with the prestigious Clarke Medal in recognition of her extraordinary bravery and selflessness.
Lisa Mandeltort, a beloved teacher from Rowville, Victoria, demonstrated unmatched courage on January 13, 2021, at Venus Bay Beach No. 1.
On that fateful evening, Lisa and her partner were enjoying a walk on the beach when they were approached by a distressed mother whose daughter and partner were caught in a rip. Without hesitation, Lisa immediately responded to the call for help, swimming into the treacherous waters to assist, demonstrating the courage that defined her character.
Tragically, Lisa was caught in the rip and could not make it back to shore. Travis Crouch, an off-duty lifeguard, rushed to the scene upon hearing about the emergency and bravely entered the water to help Lisa. Despite the best efforts of Travis and other rescuers, Lisa could not be revived.
Her selfless act of heroism, which tragically resulted in the untimely loss of her life as she attempted to save others caught in a dangerous rip, has left an indelible mark on her community and beyond. Lisa's unwavering commitment to the safety of others epitomises the values that the Clarke Medal seeks to honour.
David Arden, President of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia, remarked, “The Clarke Medal is awarded annually to the individual who has demonstrated the most outstanding act of bravery in the preceding year. The Society evaluates numerous cases involving individuals who have displayed remarkable courage in extremely hazardous situations. Lisa's act was not only exceptionally brave but also exemplifies her profound compassion in placing the lives of others above her own.”
Lisa's parents, Linda and Michael Mandeltort, along with her sister Bec and brother-in-law Harris, will be present to receive the medal on her behalf later today in a ceremony at ANZAC House. They remember Lisa as a dedicated science teacher at Nossal High School in Berwick, where she inspired her students with her passion and commitment. Lisa’s legacy of bravery and compassion continues to inspire her students, colleagues, and the broader community.
