AT 9.37pm on Tuesday night, August 27, the winds were gusting to 106km/h at Wilsons Promontory.
Emergency Vic was reporting on numerous incidents of trees down across Bass Coast and South Gippsland.
And the Bureau of Meteorology was warning that the worst was yet to come in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Earlier, on Tuesday evening at 5.37pm, they had issued a Severe Weather Warning for people in Central, East Gippsland, South West, West and South Gippsland and parts of North Central, North East and Wimmera Forecast Districts.
* This Advice message replaces the Advice issued at 2:01pm Tuesday 27 August 2024.
* The risk of damaging winds continues into Wednesday. Locally destructive winds are expected over Alpine areas tonight.
* A deep, complex low-pressure system well to the south extends a cold front which will approach Victoria later today and cross the State early Wednesday.

* This, combined with a persistent belt of high pressure across central Australia will result in a strengthening north-westerly gradient across the State during the day.
* A vigorous westerly airstream will extend across the State with and following the front on Wednesday, easing as the front moves well east of the State on Wednesday night.
Marine wind warnings for Wednesday, August 28 included a gale warning for the following areas:
Port Phillip, Western Port, West Coast, Central Coast, Central Gippsland Coast and East Gippsland Coast.
The bureau is also warning of damaging winds and wave action along the Victorian coast, especially in Bass Coast and South Gippsland with potential for serious erosion at risk points along the coast, particularly at high tide on Wednesday morning (6.30am at the Inverloch surf beach).
Take care on the roads.
