ST LAURENCE O’Toole Primary School recently finished its term with a ‘Colour Explosion’, the school’s first colour run, blending excitement for students with important fund raising to boost science resources.

Teachers and other school staff appeared to relish the occasion as much as the young brigade they were overseeing, even those who were slimed.

An impressive sum was raised in the lead up to the ‘Colour Explosion’, with the initial aim of reaching $10,000 spectacularly surpassed as that figure was more than doubled.

Local businesses provided tremendous support for the initiative, with Alex Scott and Staff, Burge’s Bus and Truck Hire, Ridley, Brandt Leongatha, Nextra Leongatha Newsagency, Nutrien, and JA & ME

Constructions contributing, for which the organisers are most grateful.

The school intends to purchase a science resource known as a ‘Nüdel Kart’ containing over 300 pieces that children can put together in endless ways to encourage imagination, creativity, teamwork, decision making and problem solving, and to develop social skills.

Parent Kaila Hutchinson spoke about the children’s reaction to the ‘Colour Explosion’ and associated fundraising effort.

“The kids are so excited and they’ve bought into it,” she said.

If they reached certain fundraising milestones, it earned them the right to slime a teacher.

Parents were in charge of preparations for the event, with Kaila, Caroline Brown and Megan Smith among the leaders of a busy team.

Teacher Marg Gatehouse was one of the staff slimed, with her attempt to shield herself with an umbrella not meeting students’ approval.

Students were sprayed with vibrant colours, with enthusiastic adults ensuring nobody was missed.

While the young participants tackled a variety of obstacles, the water-spurting unicorn became the most challenging as the oval turned slippery underfoot and many students came a cropper despite warnings not to approach too fast.
