AFTER her first week as the new Manager of the Corinella and District Community Centre (CDCC) Philippa Armstrong has been impressed by the warmth, expertise and dedication of the local volunteers who staff the centre.
“The centre genuinely seems to be the heart of the community,” said Philippa.
“I’ve already seen how people in the Waterline Community look out for each other.”
Bringing many years of experience working in community development and community arts to her new role Phillipa is committed to being approachable and responsive to the community and is looking forward to continuing the legacy of previous Manager Kerryn Ladell.
Next year Corinella will celebrate its bicentenary.
Corinella has a complex and fascinating early colonial history, the original and short-lived British settlement that went on to become Corinella was founded in 1826, nine years ahead of Melbourne.
“We’re already making plans for the 200-year anniversary with a bicentennial dinner to be held in the Corinella Hall on Saturday December 12, 2026,” said Philippa.
“There is an upcoming public meeting at CDCC on Monday August 18 at 11am and all are welcome to bring their ideas for discussion, it’s never too early to start planning.”
The Corinella and District Community Centre offers many activities.
“The annual and much-loved Art Show is a highlight,” said Philippa.
The centre is well known for its popular art and craft classes with dozens of vibrant art works hanging on the walls testimony to the creative talents of the Waterline Community.
Other activities include strength training and meditation, a Waterline Community playgroup on Tuesdays, the ever-popular community lunch every Thursday, and a community pantry that is available for people in need.
“The pantry is well stocked thanks to community contributions, generous donations and a grant from the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH),” acknowledged Philippa.
“Now is a great time to become a member of the centre.”
Opening hours are 10 am to 4pm Monday to Thursday.
