Find new friends through BCH’s Social Support Group
Our group offers people the chance to take part in social activities and gentle exercise, to develop their interests and more
IF YOU would like to build more social connections in your community, then the Social Support Group run by Bass Coast Health (BCH) may appeal to you.
Our group offers people the chance to take part in social activities and gentle exercise, to develop their interests and more.
The group is ideal for people who are unable to get out into the community due to mobility, fatigue or confidence limitations, who feel isolated and alone, and who seek community contact in a supported group setting.
BCH Social Support Group Coordinator Sharon Legg said having access to a social group is important to a person’s health and wellbeing.
“Being socially isolated can have a negative impact on our wellbeing, mentally and physically,” she said.
“Being a contributing member of a socially interactive and physically active group can help to restore self-confidence, motivation, some physical improvements and a more positive outlook.”
Social Support Group staff offer activities and opportunities for participants to maintain and enhance their independence and social contacts.
Activities include outings such as barbecues and visiting places of interest, sharing skills, hobbies and learning about the interests of others. Participants also take part in quizzes, table games, indoor bowls, pool and theme days, an exercise program, guest speakers, craft, music and more.
“We offer shorter community access outings for those who are socially isolated and have introduced a full day community access every month called the Big Day Out,” Sharon said.
“We’ve also recently acquired centres to reintroduce centre-based activities and also hold activities in the community.”
