THE Korumburra community showed enormous generosity on Sunday (June 2) taking the plunge to raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) with special guest – former Melbourne player David Neitz among the crowd cheering on those game enough to get in the tank.
Co-ordinators Ben and Elyse Fisher had immense support from the local community, with business owners, coaches, players, umpires and even South Gippsland Shire Councillors - John Schelling and Jennie Keerie submerging themselves for the Big Freeze.
FightMND was established to find effective treatment for the disease that can take someone’s life within 27 months of diagnosis, and the community were open and willing to get involved with over 20 people signed up to go under.
“I’d just like to welcome David Neitz, David has had a lot to do with MND and the Daniher family through the Melbourne Football Club and I thank him for coming down today,” said Ben.
David has worked with Neale as an ambassador for FightMND since the beginning and said this year is really special. “It’s a beast of a disease, but Neale is still with us ten years on, and the awareness he has raised and everything he has done to bring people hope through clinical trials and everything that is happening right now – it wouldn’t have happened without the fundraising,” said David.
“You all as part of the Korumburra community have been enormous in your generosity and support.”
One dollar to every pint was donated to the cause and there was a sea of blue Big Freeze beanies in the crowd. The community stood by the ‘Say.Do’ campaign this year and really let their actions speak louder than words – plunging into the coldest ice bath. To do your bit visit www.fightmnd.org.au and buy a beanie before the Melbourne Big Freeze on Monday, June 10.
