ON TUESDAY May 7 a dynamic collaboration between local groups and volunteer organisations planned a response to the homelessness crisis in Bass Coast.

Housing Matters Bass Coast hosted the meeting, with the venue kindly provided by the YES Youth Hub.

Jessica Harrison from Housing Matters Bass Coast said, “Housing is a human right. Although some housing is underway as part of the Big Housing Build, we desperately need more emergency housing to help people who will be camping or sleeping rough this winter. Our solution, which we discussed today, is a Winter Shelter program. Community spaces or church halls are already running these programs in Frankston and Ringwood, staffed by volunteers. We would love more people to join us in this project.”

“CWA Wonthaggi Owl Women are passionate about helping our local community and right now we are hearing that emergency housing is a top priority,” Heidi Vanzet Branch President CWA Wonthaggi Owl Women added.

“We look forward to being a part of this collective, connecting into other community groups, and contributing as much as we can.”

“It was great to meet everyone and discover what our clients have in common. It is very important to work together to tackle this problem,” said Leslie Adams, Manager of Wonthaggi Neighbourhood Centre.

Housing Matters Bass Coast is auspiced by Wonthaggi Neighbourhood Centre.

The next meeting of the Homelessness Coalition is Tuesday June 11 from 10am to-12pm at Wonthaggi Neighbourhood Centre, 6 Murray Street, Wonthaggi. All welcome. More information: housingmattersbc@gmail.com
