NEWHAVEN College focuses on students’ academic growth as well as their social, sporting, and cultural development. During their Senior School years, students make decisions that shape their future career paths. The aim is for every student to graduate with a clear vision of their future opportunities, whether that's further study or entering the workforce.
For the past few years, Newhaven College has offered AFL SportsReady traineeships for one lucky departing student. AFL SportsReady is a not-for-profit company dedicated to helping young Australians develop careers through traineeships, cadetships, direct employment, and educational opportunities. Traineeships provide an excellent opportunity for trainees to earn while they learn, gaining real-world experience and invaluable skills along the way.
In 2023, the role was adeptly filled by 2022 alum Jenna Harman. Jenna proved to be instrumental in the smooth running of many of Newhaven College’s sporting events. With close mentoring from Head of Senior School Sports, Stewart Bathgate, Jenna went from strength to strength throughout the year.
Jenna reflects on her time as an AFL Trainee, "I have many highlights from this year like attending camps, making friends and coaching teams. One of my most rewarding highlights was putting together the successful Newhaven South Eastern Independent Schools Association (SEISA) Athletics team. We won for the first time in SEISA history – something I was very proud to have had a part in."
With Jenna now heading out into the world to further her study and work opportunities, the College will be welcoming back 2023 Year 12 student Lucas Chihotski into the role in 2024. Lucas’ sporting background is phenomenal, having participated in numerous sporting teams and received several awards over his time at the College. His skills and knowledge will be of great benefit to students in 2024. “I’m looking forward to the challenges and triumphs of the position. It’s a great opportunity to grow and achieve successful outcomes,” Lucas says.
