Annual croquet tournament in Wonthaggi a great success

1 min read

THE annual Level Play Singles Croquet Tournament sponsored by the Wonthaggi Workers Club was held in perfect playing conditions at the Wonthaggi Croquet Club.

The two-day event was a great success, attracting a field of ten clubs from throughout Victoria, including Mornington, Sandringham, Sale, Lilydale, Monash, Drouin, Bairnsdale and Traralgon, with some excellent croquet played over two Sections.

The green was in excellent condition, and the clubhouse was sporting new signage.

In a close hard-fought result, section one was topped by Heather Bradbury from Bairnsdale with five games (+11 hoops) from David Budge of Sandringham also with five games but +10 hoops.

In Section 2, we saw Bob Quayle from Drouin win with six games (+30 hoops), triumphing over Betty Clissold from Sale with five games (+8 hoops). Our own Philip Bool, standing in at short notice in this section due to a late withdrawal, acquitted himself admirably, winning four games (-3 hoops) and finishing fourth.

“We had a very tight contest through the hoops,” said Club President Tom Lacey.

“Strategy is all important, a little like snooker or billiards with excellent jump shots and long range scoring from the boundary straight through the hoop.”

Thanks went to all the club members who contributed greatly over the two-day tournament, with special thanks also to Haymes Paint Shop, who continued to support the club with line marking paint and have done so for many years.

Social days are played at the Wonthaggi Croquet Club on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday all year round depending on the weather. Look for Wonthaggi Croquet Club on Facebook.
