I came to the Island in the early 1960s and lived in the area for 47 years.
A number of us locals hunted foxes on the Island all that time.
We used fox hounds, spotlights, other dogs, tracked and stalked them along the sand dunes, walked through the dense ti-tree patches driving them out to waiting shooters.
The last fox I saw on the Island ran across Ventnor Road in the middle of the day near Ventnor Reserve.
The Nature Parks had a hired person with a dog or dogs, killed ibis and scat was found.
The introduced wallaby has made it too difficult now to use hounds or other dogs.
This current sighting does not surprise me at all; I was always sceptical when the Island was declared fox-free.
I still hunt foxes to this day using hounds on the mainland killing up to 200 a year. I wish you well in the pursuit of one of the most cunning and destructive vermin in Australia.
