“It ignores the fact that the foundation of a strong democracy includes trust in institutions, experts and government – and that this can be built up over decades but torn down in mere years. It ignores that a strong democracy relies on debate and dialogue.”

This quote forms part of a recent address given by the New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. This politician understands that questioning is a critical part of a liberal democracy. To turn away from questioning is political cowardice at any level of government. To actively develop policies to stifle questioning is an attack on one of the founding principles of a liberal democracy and is one of principles I stood for when I served my country in the Vietnam War.

The great Athenian orator and leader, Pericles, one of the early founders of democracy, relished to opportunity to be questioned by the people of Athens. He saw it as the opportunity to shine, to provide leadership, and diminish his political opponents.

No such courage in the Bass Coast Shire. This organisation does nothing to engender trust, community engagement, mere words.
