THE inaugural all-ages Reconnect Festival was held at the Leongatha Recreation Reserve last Friday, introducing youth to a world of live music and entertainment.

The night kicked off with electric energy as the crowd welcomed Matilda Pearl, Steve Cousins, Jack Botts and The Pierce Brothers.

“The crowd has been amazing; their energy is like no other – we didn’t even have to persuade them to get up and dance, they were supporting every artist and I’ve just loved it,” said Matilda.

The all-ages event was a non-smoking, no-alcohol permitted festival surrounded by security for the safety of young patrons. Food truck vendors, including family-owned business Lime & Co, provided families with authentic Mexican food and Bean Pedlar brewed coffee all night.

Presented by The Hills are Alive and South Gippsland Shire Council, the Reconnect Festival commenced at 4.30pm for families and youth to wander in after school and enjoy the smooth atmosphere as the event opened with performances from up-and-coming artists Janie Gordon and Professional Moose.

Most patrons stayed all night, dancing in the rain and taking in the rare opportunity of connecting with their friends in a safe environment – giving them the chance to experience live music.

Alisha Gilliland and Bianca Pezzutto of Gippsland Centre Against Sexual Assault attended the festival in Leongatha to raise awareness, showing youth there is a support network available if they are looking for someone to talk to.

“We are here to support both parents and children,” Alisha said.

“Our online safety guide for parents and carers provides great advice and practical tips for safe online experiences, including how to manage cyberbullying and even managing time online effectively in a modern world.”
