ABILITY level had no bearing on the enjoyment of surfers at Inverloch on Sunday, with beaming participants and enthusiastic volunteers combining in perfect conditions for a highly successful all abilities surfing day.

The Bass Coast branch of the Disabled Surfers Association ran the event, ensuring everyone who attended enjoyed the experience of riding a few waves.

Andrew David received plenty of encouragement as he rode the surf, with the Glen Waverly local a popular identity in Inverloch, having enjoyed visits to the town for 30 years.

The expression on his face was confirmation of how much he enjoyed the freedom of the surf.

It was the fourth time Andrew has taken part in all abilities surfing.

“He loves feeling part of this community,” carer Patsy Hanley said, having enjoyed sharing many holidays in Inverloch with him.

Andrew’s family generously donated a hoist to the Inverloch Surf Lifesaving Club, enabling all abilities surfing participants to be easily transferred from their conventional wheelchairs to fat-tyred beach versions.

On the beach, teams of volunteers combined to ensure everyone had access to the surf and whatever level of assistance they required.

The mood on the beach was as vibrant as that in the water, with all clearly relishing the success of the day.

Sun shone, temperatures hovered in the low twenties and the waves remained at a height ideally suited to those starting out on their surfing journeys.

Coby Saul hadn’t surfed for a long time and was pleased with his return to the sport.

“It was a very good experience and riding the waves was fun,” Coby said, resplendent with his all abilities surfing medal.

Attendees enjoyed entertainment at the surf club bar after the event.

Other all abilities surfing days will be held at Smiths Beach on February 12, Inverloch Surf Beach on March 11 and back at Smiths Beach on March 26.
