Breakers play with Pride
Bass Coast Breakers competed in its Pride Round at the Dalyston Recreation Reserve on Saturday night.

BASS Coast Breakers hosted Tyabb for the Pride Round at Dalyston Recreation Reserve on Saturday night.

The Breakers were thrilled to be part of the night game against old rivals.

“We love it (Pride Round). It’s the round we look for to all year. We take a lot of pride in it. It’s really important to us because part of our values is being inclusive, having fun and being social, and really showing that everyone is welcome. Footy is a game for everyone,” Breakers player Jenna Russo said.

Despite the wet conditions on the night, spectators turned out to watch and enjoy the festivities afterwards.

Tyabb ultimately won the game by 22-points, with the final score being Breakers 0.3.3 to Tyabb 2.13.25.

The Breakers established a fun and friendly rivalry with Tyabb, having met each other a number of time in premiership matches.

This is the third year the Breakers have hosted a Pride Round and continue to take it up another notch.

“We aim to keep making it bigger and bigger, and getting more people behind it. After the game, we’ll stick around for some food, music and fun,” Jenna said.

“That’s what it’s all about – having fun, playing the game we love and getting to have a celebration afterwards.”

Match Report
The scene was set for a great night with giant rainbow flags and music creating a great Pride Cup vibe – unfortunately the weather didn’t get the memo.

Tyabb were quick to adjust to the conditions and created an early goal in the middle of a huge downpour. The Breakers soon found their groove, welcoming back Molly Conway who was in and
under at every contest. The midfield led by Sophie McCracken-Evans in her 100th match were working hard to win the ball at the stoppages however the home side couldn’t get it into their forward line.

Nico Randall was kept busy in the second quarter with Tyabb doing all of the attacking. With great contesting and decision making on the last line of defence, conceding a number of behinds and reducing the damage on the scoreboard.

The Breakers came out firing in the third quarter, dominating the play and creating some promising goal opportunities for the first time in the match. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to convert the great play into goals and make any inroads on the scoreboard despite keeping Tyabb scoreless for the quarter.

The wind picked up in the last quarter – unusually favouring the netball court pocket - with the ball spending a large portion of the quarter locked in there. The Breakers did well to concede just one goal for the quarter with Jayde Lamb’s pressure helping to limit Tyabb’s opportunities.

While the final score didn’t go the Breakers way the match was played in great spirits and served as a reminder that sport is about much more than winning with both teams and the community coming together after the match to continue the Pride Cup celebrations.

Final score: Tyabb 2.13-25 def Breakers 0.3-3

Best: Nico Randall, Molly Conway, Tess Angarane, Sophie McCracken-Evans, Jayde Lamb, Gaby Hynes

The Breakers will enjoy a week off before venturing to Red Hill for their last match of the season Saturday, July 13, 12pm.
