Bulldogs steamroll Dusties with train-like precision
Phillip Island’s Charlie Bruce was in form and named in the Bulldogs’ best after his performance on Saturday.

THE annual Easter clash has become a marque game of the West Gippsland league. It was all set for a massive game with last year’s runner up versus last year’s fourth placed Warragul.

On a glorious day the Island was on full display with their brand-new surface that resembled a bowling green. North of 3000 people were in attendance to see the season opener that did not disappoint.

Quarter one started with new number one ruckman Daniel Bourke taking on the man mountain Mark Bradley. The return of elite onballers Jaymie Youle and Zac Vernon was on display early in the game with Zac Vernon’s speed from contest and Youle courage and attack on the ball. Not to be outdone the sublime skilled Hayden Bruce was breaking lines and delivering the ball inside 50 at will. Youle finally broke through with a classy snap from 40 metres out. It was evident that Island was moving the ball with speed and defence led by Captain Taylor, Mark Griffin and Daniel Pearce were all standing tall. Quarter time scores Phillip Island 3.4 22 to Warragul 2.2 14.

The second quarter started with Jordan Patullo showing his usual courage and going back with the flight on multiple occasions to prevent Warragul’s ball movement. Down the other end his brother Jesse was starting to duke everything that came his way. New recruits Aaron Harris, Charlie Bruce, Josh Ryan and Tom Baulch (“Prime Train”) were all having a big impact. The Island was starting to flex their muscles kicking 4.5 to Warragul’s 2.2 in the second quarter to take a 51-28 half time lead.

The premiership quarter came, and the Island put the game out of reach kicking 6.2 to 1.4 to extend their lead 89 to 38. This quarter was dominant, ball movement was fast and controlled, tackling pressure and hunt around the contest was infectious. Step up Thomas Baulch (“Prime Train”) kicking 4 goals for the quarter and showing why there was such a buzz around the island for his arrival. Kai Mackenzie was showing a clean set of heels out of traffic and connected well with Billy Taylor who had the ball on a string.

Three quarter time brought a strong 300 plus people around the Island boys for their final address. The vibe from the crowd and the players showed there is some genuine belief building within the group. Coby Olarenshaw started the quarter how he played the entire game by beating his opponent and providing drive from the backline, Walton continued to play through the midfield and back using the ball with ease. Not being content with the score line, the Island put the foot down to extend the lead 117-54. The Bulldogs look fit and well drilled and ready for another big season ahead.
