THE BREAKERS welcomed Mornington in perfect weather for a Friday night clash under lights. The dewy conditions took a bit to get used to with both teams struggling with the slippery ball.
Mornington adjusted better and did most of the attacking in the first quarter. However, a cheeky toe poke by Jen Pomphrey on the goal line got the home side on the board and narrowed the margin going into the first break.
The Breakers won the first clearance with a beautifully read tap. Jenna Russo and Molly Conroy were combining well through the centre to clear the ball out and send it forward.
Carly Heislers run and pressure on the wing was also having an impact. It was a much more even quarter with both teams defence under pressure but holding strong with the score line remaining unchanged at half time.
In the third quarter the Breakers made the most of Sophie McCracken-Evans continued dominance in the ruck and drove the ball forward.
With the forwards doing a great job to lock the ball in it created plenty of opportunities. Tess Angarane found herself in a dangerous position at the top of the goal square, putting the home side in front.
Angarane snuck forward again, adding to her tally not long after. Mornington got one back late in the quarter setting the scene for close last quarter. With only a goal in it at the last break both teams took the intensity up a notch in what was a thrilling finish.
It was Mornington who made the most of their opportunities to sneak a couple of goals and take back the lead.
Final score: Mornington 4.4-28 def Breakers 3.4-22
Goals: Tess Angarane 2, Jen Pomphrey. Best: Jenna Russo, Tess Angarane, Molly Conroy, Sophie McCracken-Evans, Carly Heislers. Next week the Breakers face Edithvale-Aspendale at 4.40pm Saturday at Edithvale.
