Earthquake Thursday off Sandy Point. Did you feel it?
An early morning earthquake near Sandy Point failed to disturb anyone's sleep. Did you feel it?

An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred on Thursday morning, January 25, at 3.43am, off the coast of Waratah Bay but it seems no one felt it, at least not at nearby Sandy Point anyway.

“No, we didn’t feel it ands usually someone would have mentioned it,” said a spokesperson for the Sandy Point General Store.

“But 3.0 magnitude is still quite a decent one, so I expect someone felt it.

It follows another one at Sandy Point last year, at 7.04.53pm on Monday, April 17.

According to Geoscience Australia the quake hit at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles beneath the epicenter near Wilsons Promontory, early morning on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 3:43 am local time.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

“Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.9 as well.

“According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage,” they said, confirming reports that no one reported the shake.
