KORUMBURRA-BENA found itself on the winner’s list after amassing a 61-point win over Bunyip on Saturday.

The Seniors were in high spirits, taking to the field after the U16s, U18s and Reserves all enjoyed their own victories.

For the U18s, it was also the first win of the season.

The crowd got behind the Giants, with the club hosting its past players’ function with more than 250 guests.

Coming off the back of National Volunteer Week, the club expressed its gratitude to all the members who put the time and effort in to make the day a success.

On the field, the match started slow with the Giants taking the first quarter to warm up.

With Bunyip sitting on the bottom of the ladder, the Giants appeared to have an “easy win” mentality, but the opposition was there to prove that wasn’t going to be the case.

The score was relatively even in the first quarter, with the Giants taking a slim eight-point lead.

A word from coach Josh Hopkins at quarter time kicked the Giants into gear, and they went on to play the kind of footy they had been working on all season.

The Giants showed consistency for the remaining three quarters – averaging four goals per quarter – and produced an exceptional team performance.

Hopkins led by example and proved to be one of best players on the day, covering most of the ground – including the midfield and down back – and coming forward to ultimately kick four goals for the game.

Nick Besley and Tom Crocker also delivered great performances, contributing three goals each.

Goal scoring was shared between seven goalkickers, indicative of Korumburra-Bena’s strong forward line rotation.

The backline – led by Tyler Newton and Zach Walker – was also very strong, limiting Bunyip’s opportunities to hit the scoreboard.

This was Walker’s first game for the season after injury, and he proved he is going to be a real asset for the Giants going forward.

By the end of the final quarter, the Giants had gained a 10-goal lead.

Four goals were added to the tally in the last quarter, while Bunyip only managed to add a few extra points.

Korumburra-Bena will be facing Garfield in its next match.

Garfield has performed similarly to Korumburra-Bena this season, so the Giants are hoping to continue their hard work at training and make it two in a row.
