THE Greens party is entering the contest for the Bass electorate announcing conservationist and climate campaigner Callum Bugbird as their candidate.
In 2019, Callum Bugbird joined the Bass Coast Climate Action Network as a school student in Wonthaggi and played a pivotal role in lobbying Bass Coast Shire Council to declare a climate emergency.
The Victorian Greens will be pushing for a moratorium on new fossil fuel projects statewide, but as a conservationist, Mr Bugbird is also looking to address local environmental issues.
“Bass is on the frontline of the climate and biodiversity crisis, we have eroding shorelines, remnant woodlands under threat, and so many endangered species relying on us for their survival.”
Mr Bugbird has been part of Birdlife Australia’s hooded plover monitoring program since 2017.
“The plovers are a critical species to monitor during their breeding season which unfortunately coincides with the school holiday period when the Bunarong coast is at its busiest.”
Mr Bugbird has been a lead organiser of School Strike 4 Climate events and has been a strong local spokesperson for the ‘fund our future not gas’ movement.
Mr Bugbird currently works for a local environmental management company as an ecological restoration technician.
“I strongly believe the Victorian Greens are the only party with climate policies in line with the science at this election.
“Opening up new fossil fuel developments and clearing places like the Western Port woodlands in a climate crisis, is like pouring petrol on a fire when it’s your job to put it out.
“First-time voters will play a critical role in this upcoming election and they should be able to see themselves represented, while the major parties are racing each other to the bottom, I’ll fight for the future of Bass.”
