GSHS holds Smoking Ceremony to celebrate NAIDOC Week

A moving Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony and flag raising event was held at Gippsland Southern Health Service, Leongatha this morning, in celebration of NAIDOC Week.

Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud, is this year's theme, and Aunty Sonia Weston, Christopher Hume and Steve Parker led the event.

Staff and patients gathered and lined up to cleanse their mind, body and soul in the sacred smoke, to the sound of Aunty Sonias clapsticks.

The Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian Flag were raised in unison to complete the ceremony.

This was followed by a morning tea with some specially made bush tucker treats.
