ISLAND Voice has been overwhelmed with people contacting them expressing their disappointment regarding the process that Bass Coast Shire followed so far regarding the naming process for the Cowes Cultural Centre.
According to Island Voice, they believe that the community should have been asked if they wanted an indigenous name to be considered for the centre before Council approached the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (BLCAC), to identify a name for the building.
‘It would be very unfortunate if instead of promoting reconciliation, Council by its actions triggers the reverse effect,” Island Voice stated.
Island Voice would like to understand what name the Phillip Island community prefer and provide independent feedback to Council on your preferences.
They’re asking residents to complete their own survey of possible names for this pivotal piece of community infrastructure.
The survey will close on June 9, 2023 and can be found at shorturl.at/mFSV9
