WITH Tully Dickie and Jesse Patullo back in the seniors, the pre-game highlights included recruiting Tully’s father Warren into the timekeeping role for the seniors.
The Magpies came out sporting a special heritage jumper which was celebrating the 100-year anniversary of their first football premiership team, including listing all players from that momentous occasion.
Suitably primed for the occasion, the locals continued something of a repeating pattern, jumping the Bulldogs.
Unfortunately, they were unable to hit the target and were leading 3-0 when the Bulldogs finally woke up. But then wake up the Bulldogs did, taking over completely all over the ground.
Alex Duyker continued his excellent form from last week in defence, combining perfectly with Mark Griffin in the middle. Billy Taylor and Eli Richards took over in the mid-field.
The Bulldogs headed into quarter time with a 34-3 lead.
The second quarter continued the trend, with the Magpies continuing thrusting forward to be turned back by superb Bulldog defence.
Unable to penetrate the defence, the Magpies resorted to playing that bit harder, with the Bulldogs lifting.
Goals were coming from Jack Taylor, Bryce Hindhaugh and Max Blake, whilst the mid-field led by Daniel Bourke giving coach Pedersen a cop-out also leading the way.
A half-time lead of 67-10 was welcome in amongst some heavy competition from the Magpies.
The second half saw the game tighten up considerably.
The Magpies put the Bulldogs under more pressure all over the ground. Mitch Hallahan fresh from the Gold Coast Suns via Sorrento was proving a headache, captain Brayden Duve (in disguise in Number 2) provided plenty of aggression, and Jaxon Foon stepped up for the locals.
Matched by senior Bulldogs and junior Bulldogs alike – the Patullo brothers leading the senior brigade, whilst Tully Dickie and Tom Niven led the junior brigade – the third saw the Bulldogs slightly better, moving out to an 89-25 lead at three quarter time.
The final continued the close contest.
With 4 goals to 3 – including coach Pedersen and a beautiful handoff from Trav Woodfield to big Bourkie the highlights - the Bulldogs were able to move out to a strong 70-point win with a 116-46 final score line.
