THE Newhaven College Performing Arts Wing is the best of its kind in the region and on Wednesday, November 30, governors, past principals, and board of directors were invited to tour the stage one development.

Newhaven College principal Tony Corr said the evening was not an official opening of the performing arts wing, rather a welcoming for those special guests who have made an immense contribution to the college.

“The evening was a chance for us to say thank you and to showcase our new facility that we ensure will not only be a great addition to Newhaven College but also to our community,” said Tony.

In the rehearsal studio, the senior vocal ensemble, conducted by Kerryn Lockhart and accompanied by Pam Christie, performed Christmas Together by Timothy Parker, Carol of the Bells by Mykola Leontovych and Don’t Stop Me Now by Freddie Mercury.

In the Black Box Theatre, Nissa Campbell Walker performed a passionate monologue, playing character ‘Sam’ from the play ‘Red Tee’ by Lindsay Price.

Four of the five past and present principals were in attendance, including Tony Corr who hosted the evening, 2011-2020 principal Gea Lovell, 1998-2011 principal Michael Brewin and founding principal of Newhaven College from 1980 – 1989, Mr Frank Moore.

Throughout the evening chairperson of the board of directors, Mr David Jobe spoke on the history of the college, stating that it is a college tradition to celebrate each of our past principals with a hand drawn portrait to commemorate their unique and important contribution.

“It is an honour to unveil Gea Lovell’s portrait by local artist Sharee Taylor. In times of tragedy or crisis, Gea was the calm presence that our community looked to for guidance and reassurance,” said David.

An official opening of the Newhaven College performing arts wing will take place in 2023.
