A MINOR accident on the Strzelecki Highway at Boorool appears to have been caused by a young, runaway steer.

According to reports, cars slowed or stopped near the corner of the Strzelecki Highway and Boorool Road, at about 4pm on Friday, after a young, black steer got out on the road.

No one hit the steer but an elderly couple, driving north on the highway, appear to have crashed into the waiting cars, causing minor damage.

The stray young steer was rounded up, but not without considerable effort.

A local resident said fences in the area, especially those bordering the highway, are in good condition but animals can’t always be stopped.

“Some animals will find a way through a fence no matter what and I’d say that’s what’s happened on this occasion because fences are very good in the area,” she said.

Police and ambulance attended and took control of the scene.

It’s a worthwhile warning, though, to expect stock and wildlife on country roads.
