AFTER seeing their club claim the ultimate success in the fourths, the supporters from the kennel got to see the under 18s in action as reigning premiers Inverloch-Kongwak took on Phillip Island.

In a division that has improved once again in 2023, many onlookers saw a fast and extremely impressive game, where the ball went end to end with pace and precision and the pressure was high.

Following a few nervous opening minutes, thirds leading goal kicker Jarvis Harvey got the major scoring underway with his first goal.

The ‘Dogs were able to reply relatively quickly though through Jack Johnston and things heated up once again just before quarter time.

The Bulldogs took a slim two-point lead into the first break and looked to hold the momentum going into their huddle up and about, even though both sides had only converted two of their combined eight shots at goal.

This inaccuracy continued in the second, as the wind began to pick up but wasn’t really favouring either end, instead swirling around the ground.

The Sea Eagles had most of the play and looked the aggressors at the coal face, but missed key opportunity after key opportunity, keeping Phillip Island in the game, when they should’ve been put away.

At the main break, the teams had only added two behinds each to their scores, and the margin stayed at two points in favour of the red, white and blue.

Everything changed after half time though, as the minor premiers found their groove, changing angles and exposing the patchy Bulldogs defence on multiple occasions.

IK again couldn’t make the most of their shots though, kicking at 50 per cent, but their defence, which had been superb all game behind the sensational performances from Harry Butcher and Zak Box, kept the ‘Dogs to just one behind.

Their dominance in the premiership quarter meant the reigning premiers held an 11-point lead with one quarter to play, looking to hold on and bring home another flag.

And that’s exactly what they did, holding off a brave and potent Phillip Island charge and stopping them in their tracks, the Sea Eagles kept their spirited opponents scoreless in the term.

They also booted two goals of their own, as Harvey finished with two and co-skipper Will Turner sealed it with one of his own to kick off the celebrations.

Beau Davies and Noah Muller were standouts for the Island, but their fans were unable to celebrate a double delight.

Harry Butcher was named best on ground in a monster performance in defence as his side, as they had all season, showed belief and composure beyond their years and proved they are a powerhouse in the junior division.

Congratulations to Inverloch-Kongwak, the 2023 West Gippsland Under 18s premiers, and now, back-to-back premiers in the division!
