SOUTH Gippsland (SGGI) golfers’ men's team competed in the country week golf tournament in the Plate division held at Yallourn, Trafalgar, and Traralgon golf clubs. The team defeated East Gippsland 5/2 in the first round but after the buy in round two were outplayed by a strong South Western (SW) team 2/5 in round three.

Needing a good result against North Eastern (NE) in round four the team rallied winning 4 1/2 to 2 1/2 which kept the team in touch. With the final round to be played at Traralgon three teams were in with a winning chance, SGGI were level on points with NE but one game behind this meant that if NE defeated SW, SGGI needed a greater winning margin. If SW defeated NE SGGI only needed to defeat Golf Central.

The cards fell SGGI’s way with SW defeating NE 4/3 and SGGI defeated Golf Central 4/3 and securing the win. Having won the Bowl, div three in the past this is the first time that South Gippsland has won the Plate, div 2, 2024 sees the association playing in the top Shield division. SGGI have previously played in the shield division when the top two teams were promoted.

Women’s results

After many weeks of preparation, the South Gippsland country teams golfers played five matches against the cream of country golf from all over Victoria in West Gippsland.

Unfortunately, South Gippsland didn’t come away with the win, but will compete again next year.
