Wonthaggi beats undefeated Warragul in Pennant croquet showdown

1 min read

SEVEN weeks into the Pennant season sees Wonthaggi sitting in third place in the West Gippsland division having just beaten Warragul eight games to six, who, up until then, were undefeated.

Warragul leads the pack with five wins, one loss and one draw followed by Drouin, Wonthaggi, Leongatha, and Korumburra, with Phillip Island bringing up the rear.

On the weekend of October 18 and 19, two of Wonthaggi’s regular travellers ventured to Howlong, 28 kilometres west of Albury on the Victorian side of the Murray.

Neil Warburton and Kathy Ross competed in the Green Block in their Handicap Doubles, but unfortunately could only manage to win one game.

That same weekend, four members and one associate member competed in the Drouin Level Play Doubles.

In Block 1, Marj Prendergast and Terry Nash won four of their games, which was equal to the eventual winners, but put them in fourth place on hoop difference.

In Block 2, Sue Priller and Robin McKinnon (Leongatha) finished with four wins (third place), and Mike and Jo Butterfield finished runners-up with five wins.

Warragul Handicap Doubles was the next stop on the calendar on October 25 and 26 with Tom Lacey/Sue Baker winning two games, Sue Cartwright/Barbara Heesh one game and Kathy Ross/Philip

Bool winning four games and finishing third. Philip is relatively new at this tournament caper and is acquitting himself very well.

Please remember that all are welcome to come and try on any of the club days – Monday, Wednesday and Saturday – starting at 10am.

The club is situated on Wentworth Road near the sporting/pool complex.
