It wasn’t unusual to finally trail out of the council chamber at 11pm - or later, but members of the press invariably had plenty of colourful copy for the following week’s newspapers.
Who, now, has the inclination to trawl through boring minutes online?
It may not have been the most efficient way of conducting business, but it was government of the people, by the people, for the people.
It’s called democracy.
