IN a stunning display of skill and determination, the Newhaven College mountain biking team again claimed victory at the final round of the Alpinestars MTB Schools series.
It was held in Bendigo on September 17.
Thomas Courtney (Year 10), Isla McClean (Year 9) and Lucy Thompson (Year 6) emerged as champions, each securing first place in their respective age groups.
It was a remarkable feat, considering the fierce competition from more than 60 schools across Victoria.
Adding to their accolades, Isla and Lucy also clinched first place in their age categories for the overall series, while Thomas secured an impressive second place finish in the overall series standings.
Lucy’s performance in the U13 girls’ novice category was nothing short of spectacular.
The race, spanning five laps of a challenging short course totalling 9.6 kilometres, provided a thrilling contest.
Lucy held her own in a neck and neck competition, leading the pack for most of the race.
However, it was on the final lap where Lucy’s determination shone through as she surged ahead to secure victory in both the race and the series.
In her very first competitive event, Isla fearlessly tackled the long course, covering 14.2 kilometres in the U15 girls’ novice race.
With no prior mountain biking experience, Isla’s natural athleticism and passion for sports propelled her to the podium, earning her the top spot in her age category for the series.
Thomas, in the U17 boys’ novice race, demonstrated his dominance from the get-go, maintaining a commanding lead throughout the race.
His final push on the 14.2- kilometre course secured not only the race but also a remarkable second place finish in the overall series standings.
This triple gold victory by the Newhaven College mountain biking team is a triumph not only for the school but also an inspiration for young people across Bass Coast.
What makes this achievement all the more remarkable is the team have been competing for just a little over a year.
Congratulations to these young riders who exemplify the spirit of perseverance, courage and dedication in the world of mountain biking.
