THE number of reported cases of COVID-19 appear to be falling across Victoria, down to around the 3500 new cases on Sunday and Monday this week, but up to 4858 on Tuesday, August 16.
The key figure of ‘hospitalisations’ is also coming down, falling from 610 people in hospital on August 10 to 535 on Tuesday, August 16.
There have been 181 deaths related to COVID in the past week, but that number too appears to be coming down as well.
Despite that, the authority managing the outbreak in this region, the Gippsland Region Public Health Unit has launched a new initiative, designed to drive COVID-19 numbers down still further – 5 layers of protection.
A key to the 5 layers is the voluntary use of masks in several settings, and the mandatory use of masks on public transport.
The GRPHU is launching its 5 Layers of Protection campaign today, Tuesday, August 16.
“Like we layer our clothing to keep warm, we can also layer-up to protect against COVID-19 and the flu,” said GRPHU.
“Five simple layers will help you stay well this season while protecting our health system.
“Managing COVID safely in the community means riding these peaks and troughs. The GRPHU campaign reminds us that we need to continue to adapt our behaviours as often as the virus changes.

“Remember the 5 and thank you for keeping yourself and our communities safe.

How the ‘5 Layers’ work
Use a mask
· Ensure its clean & correctly fitted
· Wear one indoors & in crowded settings
· It can stop viruses spreading
· School children are encouraged to wear them at school
· Replace every four hours
· Mandatory on public transport
