THE Bass Coast Shire Council has already recognised the rapid wave erosion at the Kilcunda Surf Beach which in recent weeks has continued to undercut the Bass Coast Rail Trail.
They commissioned the Kilcunda Foreshore Erosion Options Assessment report, by BMT Commercial Australia Pty Ltd, and have already started making progress on the recommendations in the report.
The preferred option calls for a ‘Staged Retreat’ which will need to happen sooner rather than later given the damage occurring on a daily basis.
However, while rerouting the path as far back on the dune crest as possible is recommended at the first response, it may be that more extensive rerouting will also be needed sooner than expected.
Locals and regular uses of this spectacular section of the Bass Coast Rail Trail have remarked on the pace of erosion back towards the dunes.
