PLAYERS from Wonthaggi were out and about once again towards the end of April, during May and early June.

On the weekend of April 27 and 28, Tom Lacey and Sue Baker travelled to Essendon to compete in a handicap doubles tournament. They acquitted themselves very well, winning four out of their seven games.

The in-house twilight doubles final was held on April 30 with the Cool Cats (Sue Baker and Paul Andrews) overcoming Rasputin (Virginia Wheeler and Michael Barber).

Six members ventured to Phillip Island to contest their level play singles tournament. This is held over three days (May 3 to 5) and comprises three sections. Tom Lacey, Paul Andrews and Neil

Warburton competed in Section 1 with Tom being victorious, winning four games, as did four others, but having a better hoop count.

Virginia Wheeler and Mike Butterfield competed in Section 2 with Virginia winning five out of seven but finishing third on a hoops countback.

Jo Butterfield contested Section 3 and also finished third. It was a very successful three days for the Wonthaggi club.

On May 25 and 26, Drouin held its handicap doubles divided into two blocks. Tom Lacey and Sue Baker, Mike and Jo Butterfield, Gerry Kool and Sue Cartwright competed in Block 1 with the first two pairings winning three games and two games respectively. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond their control, Gerry and Sue had to forfeit after day one.

Kathy Ross paired with Terry Nash from Korumburra in Block 2 and also won three games.

Phillip Island was the venue for an open doubles tournament held June 1 and 2.  One section of eight pairs competed with the stalwarts Tom Lacy and Sue Baker (three from seven games), Mike and Jo Butterfield (two from seven games), Kathy Ross and Marjorie Prendergast (three from seven games) and Virginia Wheeler teaming up with Helen Checkley from Korumburra (three from seven games).

It was a great effort by all, but once again missing out on top billing.

On May 6, the club celebrated the official opening of the new pavilion. The club now finally has a complex which it can be very proud of. Much thanks must go to the Bass Coast Shire Council and the Victorian Government for funding this project.
