WITH R U OK? Day on this Thursday, September 8, local ambassador Michelle Debenham is highlighting this year’s theme that no qualifications are needed to ask the question.

R U OK? Day is a National Day of action and a reminder that every day is a day to check in with your friends, family and colleagues.

This year, R U OK? are championing the message; ‘Ask R U OK? No qualifications needed’, to remind Australians they already have what it takes to support the people in their world who might be struggling.

Michelle, a Kardella South resident, spoke about why she decided to become an ambassador and the importance of mental health.

“I’ve been working in mental health for about seven years,” she said.

“I had a couple of people that I know struggle with mental health issues, and I decided to get involved more.

“I like the fact that R U OK? was applicable to everyone, and the theme is you don’t have to be an expert.

“That was one of the reasons why I wanted to become an ambassador because it was something anyone could do or ask.”

Michelle highlighted that people often just needed someone to talk to, as was the case with a young man she spoke with recently.

“He was in a really tough situation, he was isolated, didn’t drive and couldn’t get to (mental health) services at the time,” she said.

“Having that conversation with him was really important and he talked about what he needed and was going to help.

“He did end up getting services in place, but at that time, he just needed someone to listen.”

Michelle added that as part of her role, she also has the chance to speak at community events and with organisations.

“For example, this week I’m going to the fire brigade and the SES,” she said.

Other events will also be held locally this Thursday, including at Korumburra Community House and the Wonthaggi Plaza.

R U OK? have also released a range of free resources including guides, tips and ideas to help Australians know when and how to have an R U OK? conversation.
