TALENTED Korumburra musician Kaylah Thomas is set to release her second single, ‘Reminiscing’ later this month.
She views it as the flipside to her debut single ‘Are the Angels’.
“It looks at loss and love and that relationship again, but it’s presented in a warmer way,” Kaylah said of her latest song.
“Whereas ‘Are the Angels’ showcases the negative associations and destruction of grief, ‘Reminiscing’ portrays the nostalgic and brighter side of grief that can be gained with time and closure.”
While Kaylah again learned from the process of creating her single and getting it ready to launch, it came together more easily than her first due to her previous experience.
“This time it was so much easier and the whole process was a breeze because I knew what I was doing and I felt more confident,” Kaylah said.
Challenges with mastering that arose with her first single didn’t occur this time.
One part of the process that proved less straightforward was editing the accompanying music video for ‘Reminiscing’, filmed and produced by her boyfriend Bodhi Hawken.
“I edited the whole video and it took me a while because it’s not one of my strengths, but I was determined to do it,” Kaylah said.
That fits in with her philosophy of choosing growth over comfort, something she recently encouraged year 12 graduates at her old school Korumburra Secondary College to do.
As with her previous single, Greg Walker was Kaylah’s producer.
“I was super excited to work with Greg again,” she said.
“He can play every musical instrument under the sun and one of the things I love about Reminiscing is that there’s a Chinese violin in it.”
A new challenge awaits Kaylah, who is looking forward to studying Music Composition at the University of Melbourne.
She decided on a change of direction after initially studying elsewhere for a double degree in Law and Music, realising that while she passed Law, it wasn’t her passion.
Reminiscing launches on February 26.
