Take a ride to Korumburra

A SIGNIFICANT milestone on the Great Southern Rail Trail extension has been reached with the opening of the Leongatha to Korumburra section recently.
The section, which spans 15.8km, features magnificent views of rolling green hills and connects South Gippsland’s two largest townships.
Construction of the trail between Leongatha and Korumburra involved gravel placement, drainage, fencing, road crossings and construction of a new bridge as well as three new bridges decks and railing.
The new section is a welcome addition to the existing Great Southern Rail Trail, which is already popular with locals and visitors.
The trail travels through Leongatha, Ruby, Kardella and Korumburra along the old railway corridor.
Works on the next section - between Korumburra to Nyora - are also progressing well.
The Korumburra to Bena section is on track to open mid-2022 after bridge works are completed and the entire section is expected to be open by the end of the year.
The Leongatha to Korumburra rail trail extension was funded by South Gippsland Shire Council, with support from the state government who contributed $500,000 via the Regional Infrastructure Fund.
