ON SATURDAY, May 14, Wonthaggi Clay Target hosted the Ashley De Ross Memorial Shoot in recognition of a great friend and true gentleman of the club.
Joined by Ashley’s daughter, Ebony Furmston, son-in-law, Ray and grandson Baden, Wood Point, Nepean, Mornington and Melbourne shooters came down for the day in what was an all-weather event.
“Today meant a lot – it’s lovely,” Ebony explained.
“It’s so nice that he had a family (in the club) that loved him as much as we did.”
Father, Aaron, and son, Logan, battled it out in the C Grade shoot out, whilst Daniel Cleary of Mornington CTC took out the Open Award, gifting his winning sash in Bundaberg Rum colours to Ebony.
A collector of Bundaberg Rum, the runners up raffle was a bottle.
“Ashley was a top member of the club,” Ian Kent explained.
“He was well respected and I’m proud to have called him my mate.”
“His input – he was always doing stuff (for the club).
“We used to travel together; I miss the traveling companion - we often had a bit of rivalry when shooting and it didn’t really matter who won.
“He was a true gentleman of the sport.”
“He always had a smile!” Mel Durkin added.
“And would always be the first to greet you.”
Other winners on the day were: Cranky McCall (Woods Point GC) – AA Grade, Lucky Phil Lancaster (Mornington CTC) – A Grade, Dakota Suckling (Wonthaggi) – B Grade & Ladies, Logan White (Wonthaggi) – C Grade & Junior and Ian Kent (Wonthaggi) – Veteran.
Alister Gammaldi and Stuart Allen took out the cake shoot.
“I’m so grateful to everyone for today and the sashes being here that was a favourite.”
