I note with considerable sadness that the Liberal Party has decided to oppose the Voice.
I would also note that former Prime Minister John Howard chose not to issue an apology to the Stolen Generation.
When some years later Prime Minister Kevin Rudd did issue an apology to the Stolen Generation, I don’t remember it being the end of the world as we know it.
What I do remember was the tears of members of that generation as their pain was acknowledged. I remember it as a unifying and healing moment.
As an ex-serviceman I believe in democracy and totally respect the right of others to hold a different opinion to me but that doesn’t mean I don’t feel sad.
I would also point out that First Nations Peoples have fought side by side with other Australians in every war Australia has ever fought for our democracy even when they didn’t have a vote.
