IN THE article ‘Blow for Hastings, boon for Barry Point’ in the January 9 edition Gippsland South MP Danny O’Brien suggests Barry Beach could be some sort of staging point for offshore wind farms.
This is in response to the decision by the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP federal Minister for the Environment to refuse such a facility at Hastings on the grounds of the adverse impact on the Western Port Ramsar site.
An examination of the boundaries of the Corner Inlet Ramsar site reveals that any construction at Barry Beach, of the scale proposed at Hastings, would intrude into the internationally protected wetland east of Wilson’s Promontory, with all the implications that halted the Western Port plan.
