PHILLIP Island’s Joel Robinson recently represented Australia in the FIBA U17 World Cup.
It was an incredible experience for the young basketballer, as the Australian team “the Crocs” won four of the seven games played.
The tournament was held in Turkey from June 29 to July 7.
Australia defeated Egypt, Canada and Germany, with Joel playing his best game in the win against the Philippines.
During the Philippines match, Joel’s performance stood out with 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
Unfortunately, Australia lost an important game to Italy but delivered an exciting match that ran into overtime.
Italy went on to be defeated by the USA in the grand final.
“It’s a pretty good effort to lose in overtime to the silver medal winner. They all played very well,” Joel’s father Terry said.
The Australian team ranked 15th overall.
Terry has coached Joel through his basketball journey, which started in the Phillip Island and District Basketball Association.
Joel has also played rep basketball with the Korumburra Basketball Association and for Victorian state teams.
Terry said Joel has always loved the game and is thrilled to have the opportunity to compete at a high level against the best.
“He really tested himself going into the World Cup and definitely stood up to the challenge,” Terry said.
Joel will be part of the Australian team going to China for the Shanghai Invitational U18 tournament.
He was selected following his performance in the U17 World Cup team.
The tournament will run from August 4 to August 12.
“He has really enjoyed his experience and is looking forward to the next competition,” Terry said.
