Be prepared for severe weather, says SES

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a Severe Weather Warning for dangerous surf along the South West and Bass Coast.

The Bureau is forecasting a strong cold front to pass through the state this weekend, bringing with it very windy and wet conditions across Victoria including; damaging wind gusts, minor to moderate flooding in the northeast, damaging surf, and abnormally high tides with the potential to cause inundation of low-lying areas.

The Victoria State Emergency (VICSES) is urging Victorians to stay safe, monitor warnings and be vigilant as volunteers prepare to respond to calls for emergency assistance.

A Severe Weather Warning is current for Damaging Winds of 90 to 100km, which will develop overnight tonight and persist through Saturday on and south of the ranges.

Victorians are encouraged to check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured, and to move vehicles under cover or away from trees. Blizzard conditions are also forecast for alpine areas during Saturday.

Minor Flood Warnings are current for Kiewa, Murray and King Rivers with a Flood Watch in place for parts of Northeast Victoria and the Mitchell and Macalister catchments in Gippsland.

However, the flood risk is well below what was experienced in late 2022 with only minor flooding anticipated, with the chance of isolated moderate flooding in parts of the North East

With this being the last weekend of school holidays for winter break, VICSES advises campers to ensure they set up camp on higher ground away from rivers, creeks and streams, and never camp underneath trees that can fall, or lose limbs in strong winds.

VICSES has issued an Advice message on Vic Emergency for the risk of high tides and storm surge causing nuisance flooding in some localised areas along the Yarra River including Southbank, Patterson River on Port Phillip Bay, and Gippsland Lakes, including Lakes Entrance.

Victorians are reminded to drive to the conditions and to never drive on flooded roads. Be alert to dangerous road conditions when driving, including low visibility, fallen trees and powerlines. Be prepared to take an alternative route. Delay travel if it appears unsafe and stay inside if conditions outside appear dangerous.
