‘Beach weather’ cuts crowd numbers at Woolamai
Jockey Jasmine Trenwith ran a bold race on outsider Acey Deucy in the second at Woolamai to bring off an all-the-way win against the chasing pack headed by Anything But.

THE action on the track was thrilling and the cool shade of the famous elm trees welcome, but the lure of Bass Coast’s beautiful beaches was more to the liking of visitors and locals last Saturday than a day of racing at Woolamai.

The crowd numbers were down as a result but ‘Kids Day Out’ was a success all the same and there wasn’t a better place to be on a hot day than enjoying a picnic in the shade at Woolamai.

There was a thrilling start to the action on the track with jockey Melinda McDonald and the Jason Evans’ trained Sacra just holding off a determined drive to the line by Jack Virgona on Up To Me followed by a brave ride by a delighted Jasmine Trenwith to get Acey Deucy home with an all-the-way effort from Anything But.

Virgona was just warming up, however, and made no mistake in claiming the third race on the favourite Bleuet De France for trainer Ebony Tucker and the fifth on Carlito Brigante for Jason Evans.

The result in the fourth also pleased favourite backers when Zeftino saluted for trainer Rob Blacker under the urging of jockey Rowan Cox.

It cleared the way to the final race on the card and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when retiring stalwart of Victorian picnic racing Grant Seccombe brought the Troy Kilgower-trained Elly Dee back to the winners’ circle after a great ride and an impressive 3.5 length win.

It was the perfect finish to another great day of racing at Woolamai setting the club up for its Alex Scott & Staff Woolamai Cup meeting on Saturday, February 8.
