‘Behind the Lens’ launches at Wonthaggi Library
After an introduction by Photography and Friendship tutor, Geoff Ellis, and BCAL CEO Deb Watson, Kate took to the stage to welcome guests and launch her much anticipated photography book.

IT WAS a proud day on Saturday as Kate    Harmon launched her first photography book entitled, Behind the Lens.

A collection of photographs from across Bass Coast and South Gippsland, Kate found her niche and has honed her skills over the past couple of years under the watchful eye of Bass Coast Adult Learning tutor, Geoff Ellis.

“It’s been an unbelievable year,” Kate explained.

“Moving from Queensland to Victoria and meeting Geoff, I started a new adventure and here I am launching my first photography book.”

“I feel like shouting – if they could see me now!”

Kate’s journey hasn’t always been a smooth ride, but she found her place upon returning to Victoria in April 2015.

Fast forward and Bass Coast Council’s grant made one of Kate’s dreams a reality, providing a grant for her to create and launch her photography book on none other than International Day of People with Disability.

“Wonthaggi was a turning point for me, for the first time in my life I left like I belonged, fitted in…

“Then being with NDIS was a big step for me, acknowledging and accepting my disability, and being supported to enhance my life, build on challenges and focusing on my abilities,

“NDIS got me to BCAL, a cherry on the cake.”

Supported by terrific programs and people, Kate was encouraged to follow her dream.

“Geoff, he has been beside me at every step almost any hour, his mentorship and endless encouragement got me here; the library for hosting this event; and my mum for moving us to Wonthaggi and brainwashing me with ‘Kate do not be defined by other people, you be the person you want to be’.”
