THE reading of the report on the 2024 Bass Coast Council Survey is one of the reasons I have chosen to stand for the Bass Coast Council election.
The summary highlighted the focus areas of “…transparency and communication around its decision-making and consultation processes.”
These areas were ranked lowest by residents and those aged 65+. I believe the cause is the seemingly exclusive use of electronic media (social media/web pages to communicate. This ignores the fact that many in the above demographic are unable or unwilling to use those means.
I recall other councils in the state provide information on plans and projects via print included in the quarterly rate notices. Bass Coast could adopt this method of communication as well as the use of print media to better illustrate reasons for decisions and to demonstrate clear direction for ratepayers. To reduce waste, this could be an “opt-in” program.
If elected to council, I will advocate for more inclusive means of communication for a better-informed community
Darrell Silva, Candidate for Bass Coast, Island Ward.
